This lesson is appropriate for students studying Early American history and Virginia history from 1630-1915. Maps drawn in the 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries are available for viewing.

The activity was designed to address Virginia Social Studies Standards for grades 4-5, and these standards are listed in the lesson plan. The lesson plan format used was created by the National Park Service. The format can be found on the service's Teaching with Historical Places website.
