[top] History

All astronauts were trained as helicopter pilots. Helicopter flight motions are similar to flying and landing the Lunar Module on the Moon's surface. Helicopter training was completed at Naval Air Station, Pensacola and Ellington Air Force Base in Houston. Each Astronaut was required to fly at least 110 hours a year to keep their helicopter certification.

Each astronaut also had to learn how to exit his space capsule once it splashed down in the ocean. Upon landing the astronauts would crawl out of the small end of the capsule, either into a life raft they inflated, or, if they chose to wait for the recovery helicopter, they would crawl out of the hatch into the rescue harness.
