The launching of the first rocket on June 27, 1945. The initial operations were to check the tracking station location and operation, check the use of Doppler radar for measuring rocket velocity, and gain experience with rockets.

The first attempt to launch an instrumented capsule was with a Little Joe booster in October 1959. Little Joe was used to test various components of the Mercury spacecraft. Little Joe can be visited at the Hampton Air Power Park.
