The tunnel log for the years 1941 to 1949 is missing (if it ever existed). Bobby Berrier attempted to reconstruct the test log for those years by using photo numbers and other documents. By his reconstruction, the following photos were taken for Test 7 which actually occurred ahead of Test 6 during July 1943 (between the two Test 5 entries). An outdoor static (no external flow) test was also conducted in Sept. 1943 ahead of the Test 5 static test. This test was conducted on a McDonnell XP-67 Bat (or Moonbat) engine/nacelle/truncated wing model. The full-scale engine was the Continental XIV-1430-17/19 12-cylinder inverted-vee liquid-cooled engine. The test uncovered problems with engine cooling airflow through the engine nacelle; these problems were never fully resolved. The aircraft development was also delayed by intense competition for testing time in the tunnel.

In 1940, the U.S. Army Air Corps issued Request for Proposal R-40C, requesting designs for a high-speed, long-range, high-altitude interceptor intended to destroy enemy bombers. The specifications were very bold, encouraging manufacturers to produce radical aircraft that would outperform any existing fighter in the world at the time. The final McDonnell design, the McDonnell XP-67 "Bat" or "Moonbat", was powered by a pair of engines in wing-mounted nacelles with 4-bladed propellers in a tractor configuration. However, the design was quite ambitious; the design team tried to maintain a true airfoil section through the center fuselage, merge the rear portions of the engine nacelles with the wing, and radically fillet all edges of the fuselage and nacelles into the wings in an effort to reduce drag. The design used laminar airfoil sections throughout. The production aircraft was intended to have a pressurized cockpit, a novel innovation at the time. Although the design was conceptually advanced, it was beset by numerous problems and never approached its anticipated level of performance. The project was cancelled after the sole completed prototype, which first flew on January 6, 1944, was destroyed by an engine fire.
