Autogiros could make extremely short takeoffs and landings, but were not capable of the helicopter's hovering or vertical flight. In theory the Autogiro's main advantage over the conventional airplane was that, in the event of engine failure, its autorotation permitted safe descent. Shown with the YG-1 is NACA engineer John Wheatley.
